Electro-Voice South Africa

Prosound were asked to help out with PA for Tailor, the London based South African artist at Music Box “Hotspot Concerts “on Saturday 21 April.

Always keen to help out local musicians where they can, and being able to provide a fit for purpose PA system for the intimate 60 seater venue, Prosound supplied the latest range of ELX200-10p tops with a single ELX200-12sp sub. Not too loud and obtrusive for the discerning music listener, with clarity essential for Tailor’s heartfelt lyrics and brittle melodies.

So impressed with the system that Glyn Berridge, owner of Music Box and curator of the Hotspot Concerts will be holding on to the EV ELX200 system for a while to come. With more top local acts booked to play at the “under house” parties, we’re certain this PA system is going to get some good use out of it.

Prosound have always been forerunners in providing equipment for bands, vocalists and DJs whether they’ve made it to the big time, or just starting out on their musical journey.

While Electro Voice has been the brand of choice for established acts like Wonderboom, Prime Circle and Just Jinjer for many years, Prosound will always be looking for ways to assist emerging talent, and have proudly supplied BCUC, DJ Soosh and Shortstraw with gear.

Review of Electro Voice Evolve 50 by DJ Martin Thomas

My name is Martin Thomas, I DJ at venues around Johannesburg, most notably at Great Dane in Braamfontein, where I play every Saturday. I have also appeared at festivals like Rewind 80’s Festival, VW VIVO Festival and BMW Motorrad days.

I was asked to play at the opening night of Speak No Evil, a new speakeasy style bar in Rosebank, on the incredibly hip corner of Bolton and Jan Smuts avenue. It’s a small venue, designed to be the “holding area” for patrons waiting to get into the highly elite Sin+Tax, a hidden venue behind Coalition Pizza. You have to know the password to get in. Speak No Evil is the venue where you can find out that password.

Being opening night, and being such a small venue (60 people max) I wanted to provide a PA that sounded appropriate for such a high end place, but I also knew that space would be at a premium, so when Prosound asked me if I wanted to demo the Evolve 50s, I jumped at the chance because their sleek design and crisp sound would be perfect.

My brief as a DJ for the night was 90’s hip hop, Prince style funk, and current RnB tunes, so low frequencies would be essential, and the two Evolve 50 subs delivered. The built in DSP and 3 band graphic built into the speakers is pretty handy, meaning I could play directly out of my controller without having to use an additional mixer to get more EQ.

The DJ box was set up in the very back of the venue, in a small alcove, so one Evolve50 tower fitted in neatly behind me, working as a monitor and main speaker for the area in front of the DJ box. This area inevitably ended up being the dance floor.
The venue is very Williamsburg in it’s design. Split level, with arches separating the two floors. I placed the second Evolve 50 tower on the top level, firing onto the main bar area and the tables outside. The owner of Speak No Evil was adamant that he wanted the music to most definitely spill out onto the pavement. As there was no place to put a speaker right at the entrance, the throw of the Evolve50 from inside the bar was more than enough. I had one patron tell me that he had followed the music from around the block. Pretty good considering the music was never too loud that people couldn’t have a natter, but still with enough volume to dance to. One tower can do 1000w , with 500w coming from the sub, and 500w coming from the line array design of 8 x 3.5” neodymium drivers

How did opening night go? Fantastically well, with Speak No Evil being packed til just about closing time. The owners were very congratulatory about my music on the night, but for me it was the Evolve 50s that brought people to the place. There are quite a few venues on the strip, but the best sound was coming from Speak No Evil, and people gravitated to it.

And then the best part of the night, packing up literally took less than ten minutes. The Evolve 50 tower comes with a sturdy bag, Prosound are able to provide bags for the subs. Neat compact, and in the van in less than ten minutes. Another time this ease of use would come in handy would be for wedding djs who are doing sound for both the ceremony and reception, and have to bounce between the two venues. Less cables to roll up, lighter gear to carry. Perfect.

The Evolve 50s are also Bluetooth enabled so you can control them with an app, or stream directly from a device to the speakers, which can be linked via Bluetooth. Another great solution for venues that need to control the DJ remotely, or add a new playlist via their phones for the day trade. Also includes RCA input and mini-jack input.

Would a DJ or rental company get return on investment on the Evolve 50s? Absolutely. With the proliferation of new bars happening all over Johannesburg , who’s focus may be more centered on the design and feel of the place, rather than their audio installation, they would need to rent in sound for the DJ. The compact design of the Evolve50 would be perfect for their classy venue, and as mentioned, plenty loud enough.

Thanks to Prosound and Apex Pro for the opportunity to demo their great product. For more information please call Prosound 011 470 6800
