The recently opened Banff Gondola Terminal represents quite literally a high point in lighting installations for ETC. Perched on a mountain peak with an elevation of 2,281 metres (7,486 feet), the four-storey structure gives visitors access to restaurants, bars, retail stores and stunning views of the Rocky Mountains. Brewster Travel Canada, working with a team of subcontractors, completed the 3,251 square metre (35,000 sq ft), $26 million reconstruction in 12 months. Video screens, reading panels and three-dimensional displays depict information of the park’s iconic flora and fauna, designed specifically to thrill and entertain the roughly 600,000 visitors who take the gondola annually, says Dave McKenna, president of Brewster Travel Canada.
Following a very “green” mandate from the end users, the entire facility uses ETC LED fixtures to create theatrical interior looks to match the spectacular exterior vistas. The project was not without its logistical challenges, as Michael Pyatt, of GES and project manager for the design team, explains: “We had to complete the install in three phases while the attraction was open to the public, and during the better weather months.”
With no access road, all the equipment had to make the eight-minute gondola ride to the oxygen-scarce heights, and – as opening day approached – the gondolas were running 24/7 to meet deadlines. Many of the bulkier pieces of gear had to be delivered by helicopter or in a specially enlarged gondola that could only be used outside of public opening times.
Pyatt’s previous experiences with GES, on their very successful touring exhibitions (Harry Potter and the soon-to-be-launched Avatar) were very much at sea level. He hired lighting designer Josh Starr whose background was exclusively in New York theatre and live events. “They wanted a theatrical twist on a permanent install, and I jumped at the opportunity,” says Starr.
Working only from renderings and photographs, his design uses ETC Source Four Mini fixtures and Selador Desire® D22 track-mount units. “I wanted to streamline the building, and these fixtures gave me the texture, colour and templates I needed for the job.” Because of Park Canada regulations on the exterior lighting of high-profile buildings, the design focused on the indoor retail, performance and interpretive spaces. After an initial contact with Warren Mays of Los Angeles-based ETC representative MPA, the sale was handled by Christie Lites’ Calgary office. Comparing this project to lighting a Broadway show, Starr says: “In the theatre, you get the electrician to move a light a few feet and it’s no big deal. In buildings, you are part of a huge team, where if you don’t plan ahead, you will have to live with your mistakes.”
With approximately 150 D22 LED luminaire packs, 100 Source Four Minis and 150 GDS ArcSystem Pro One-Cell fixtures, the Unison Paradigm®-controlled system has an amazingly small, three-phase, 25-amp power requirement.
ETC service technician Tyler Martin, who worked through Field Service CA, explains: “The whole building is automated for convenience using Paradigm control and the astronomical time clock feature.” At 7am as the sun is rising over the Rockies, the lighting system executes its early-morning look and at the end of the day, as the guests dine in the fading light, another cue dims fixtures that reflect on the glass surfaces to create an unimpaired view of the scenery.
Starr makes full use of the colour palettes in the Paradigm controller to “make the images pop.” Foliage breakups in the Source Four Minis add to the displays depicting Canada’s natural majesty. Unison racks drive the Source Four Minis, sconce lights, relay switches, and house, emergency and décor lighting. In another ‘first’ in this remarkable installation, a GDS ArcSystem is running wirelessly at 2,500m (8,200 ft) above sea level.
Despite its tiny power requirement, the building is well-prepared for future expansion as it gains popularity as one of Canada’s premier tourist destinations. The lighting tracks are powered but not fully populated, and each floor has extra nodes and push-button stations to allow for additional fixtures. “We are using about 1,500 channels of control, but have the mains power and control capability to add more universes in the future,” adds Tyler.
Despite “challenges associated with a project being on top of a mountain,” Michael Pyatt and the entire design team are more than ready to take a deep breath and move onwards, if not upwards.

Lighting is a hands-on business, but the latest technology is often out of reach for students. To address this issue, ETC is offering a special lighting controls package exclusively to students and educators. The ETCnomad Student Package, now available from ETC dealers, allows students and teachers to purchase a 512 ETCnomad software key and a Gadget II USB to DMX/RDM interface for the usual price of just the Gadget alone.
The software key unlocks fully-functioning, professional Eos® software for Mac or PC, while the Gadget allows a computer to output two universes of DMX to the rig. Armed with a laptop and these small-but-mighty devices, students can hone their skills, supplement the equipment at their schools, colleges, universities or local theatres, and go out into the world with their own, portable ETC lighting control system.
This global offer extends to primary, secondary and university-level students and teaching staff and to individuals in apprenticeship or internship programs. To qualify for the Student Package, students and educators must submit a completed application form and a copy of a student ID or other proof of current enrolment or employment to their local ETC dealer or distributor. A heavenly lighting effect has been created for the current production of The Dying Screams of the Moon at Johannesburg’s Market Theatre. The unusual solution features a series of unique, handcrafted gobos, and ETC Source Four® LED lighting fixtures supplied by Prosound.
Forming part of the venue’s 40th anniversary celebrations, the play runs from 28 July to 21 August. It marks the first time collaboration of theatre legends Zakes Mda and John Kani, and is set to become a part of theatre history.
The play features an all-female crew and creative team, including award-winning specialists in lighting, costume, set design, production management and marketing. This celebration of women coming together is a memorable event that will appropriately play for much of South Africa’s Women’s Month.
The Dying Screams of the Moon is about two women who meet at church, a place of solace, where they seek inner peace from their troubles of the past. Set in post-apartheid South Africa, it reveals the struggles for land ownership that are still relevant today.
In order to create the majestic stained glass window effect, the church setting called for specific lighting. However, the restricted budget of the play meant that a glass gobo was not an option and it was necessary to devise an alternative solution.
Nomvula Molepo, head of lighting at the Market Theatre, was keen to use ETC Source Four LED luminaires to help realise her vision, and contacted Prosound for assistance. Ian Blair, Prosound’s GM of lighting and structures, offered to supply Nomvula with the fixtures. He also sent Prosound’s lighting specialists, Mac Makhobotloane and Jannie de Jager, to assist with creating the effect that was required.
“The service was awesome! Mac and Jannie brought a variety of fixtures to experiment with in order to achieve the effect I was looking for,” said Nomvula. “We tested the fixtures to see if I could get the desired effect. Then, Mac suggested that I get steel gobos, cut small pieces of gels and paste them onto the gobos. Mac and I tested one fixture and it worked like a dream!
“I’m very grateful to Prosound for supplying the fixtures. And, I’d particularly like to thank Mac and Jannie for all their effort, time and support in assisting me with making the lighting work for the production.”
The ETC Source Four LED fixtures were not only able to capture the look Nomvula wished for, but they were also easy to operate. “I would definitely consider using the fixtures on future productions,” she said.
Thanks to Prosound and ETC, the church scenes in The Dying Screams of the Moon are bathed with the magnificent and divine illumination of stained glass windows.

Every August, the world’s largest arts festival, Edinburgh Festival Fringe, takes over Scotland’s capital. Thousands of performers take to hundreds of stages to present shows for every taste. C venues is back for its 25th year, creating and curating more than 20 theatre, performance and exhibition spaces at pop-up venues in and around the city centre. This year, C venues’ visiting designers and technicians are using some of the latest products from ETC for a vibrant and packed programme of theatre, circus, cabaret, musicals, dance, comedy and children’s shows.
“ETC has been supporting C venues for a number of years, allowing us to improve the capability of our venues and exposing ETC products to young, up-and-coming theatre companies and technicians,” says Richard Williamson, head of production, C venues. “ETC has a long reputation for producing well-built, reliable equipment and providing an exceptional level of technical support; and we are thrilled to be using the new ETC ColorSource consoles and lanterns.
“The consoles are a great addition to the market and are perfect for our smaller spaces. We have long been looking for a lighting desk which people new to the industry can quickly and easily pick up and use. We’re excited about the possibilities that the ColorSource consoles give us. They fill an underserved niche in the market for a truly intelligent console for smaller venues.”
To equip the festival’s larger spaces, C has added to its existing stock of ETC Eos® family consoles, supplementing its Ion® desks with Ti and Element consoles. Notably, a Ti is situated in the largest theatre, C scala, controlling a number of high-profile shows including Tipping Point by Ockham’s Razor; Fringe favourites The Rat Pack Live; and the all-male a cappella group All The Kings Men. “The Eos range is the de facto industry standard console so we couldn’t imagine using anything else for our bigger venues,” says Williamson.
Additionally, the issue of heat generated by conventional tungsten fixtures has long been a challenge for C venues. For several years, the company has been looking to move its lighting rigs towards LED to help combat this. This year, several venues are benefitting from the installation of ETC ColorSource fixtures that – as well as their low heat output – are recognised for producing a richer, more natural light output than other LED fixtures at such an accessible price point.
“While LED units have been on the market, we have struggled to find any that properly give the level of control and colour rendering that tungsten offers. The new ColorSource LED fixtures are perfect for our needs and, used alongside ColorSource consoles, we are now able to look to significantly expand our use of LED,” says Williamson.
