Audio-Technica’s new AT5047 cardioid condenser studio microphone has recently been used on a wide variety of projects from top producers and engineers in the industry.
Multi-Grammy award-winning engineer/mixer/producer Ross Hogarth (Keb’ Mo’, Flogging Molly, Van Halen) has been in the studio with the AT5047 and shared his thoughts.
“When I first heard about the innovative multi-capsule technology of the AT5047 microphone, it really tickled my curiosity,” said Hogarth. “In testing out and using the AT5047, I found the microphone to be incredibly flat and uncoloured. One can choose to colour it with different preamps and compression choices. The headroom and flat response makes the 5047 an extremely versatile microphone.”
Niko Bolas, known for his work with Neil Young, Melissa Etheridge and Warren Zevon, added, “In all, the AT5047 is a very unique microphone, having the character and dynamics of a great condenser but the shape and size of a really good ribbon. We used it on a recent project for The Mavericks, on all the acoustic guitars, most of the percussion and electric guitar.”

Multiple-Grammy award-winning engineer and producer Al Schmitt (Paul McCartney, Bob Dylan, Diana Krall), a long-time Audio-Technica user, revealed, “I just used the AT5047 on a male vocal at La Fabrique in Provence, France. I’m just knocked out by how good this mic sounded, now it’s on my bucket list to have in my personal arsenal.”
Robert Carranza (pictured), whose extensive work includes a wide variety of artists including Marilyn Manson, Salvador Santana, Jack Johnson, The Mars Volta and more, commented, “In this new age of making records in hotel rooms, on tour buses or just about any place with a power outlet, the AT5047 is as elegant as a photographer’s Leica camera, yet rugged enough to take anywhere and capture the nuances of any tone.”

The most recent addition to the company’s 50 Series, the AT5047 is a premier studio microphone that features the same capsule as the AT5040 but with a transformer-coupled output and optimised electronics, designed for capturing instruments as well as vocals.
Criss Angel’s Mindfreak Live! at the Luxor Resort and Casino in Las Vegas, upends people’s views of magic and awes spectators with a goth-horror vibe mixed with rock ‘n’ roll spectacle. The production has the largest number of moving lights on the Las Vegas Strip and combines movering heads, lasers, video and more into one seamless show.
The large number of fixtures and media demands may be taxing some consoles, however ETC’s Eos Ti performed optimally for the task at hand. ETC’s recent online video release follows lighting programmer Josh Selander and gives viewers a behind-the-scenes look at how he pulled together one of the most technically demanding shows on the Strip, demonstrating why the Eos Ti, in the hands of a master programmer, delivers.
Some of the features of Ti that Selander highlights include syncing the console to music and multiple versions of time code for the different ways needed to call a show; using absolute effects to work intensity and colour changes, adding a charge to an illusion’s finish; and leveraging the pixel mapping feature to treat the console as a media server and easily snap between content on LCD panels.

Built from the ground up, these AES67 products enable Attero Tech’s innovative audio connectivity technologies to interface with the AES67 enabled Q-SYS Platform from QSC. In addition to basic audio interoperability, all Attero Tech endpoints will offer control integration into Q-SYS Designer software using Q-SYS plug-ins, developed and supported by Attero Tech. Some of these plug-ins are already shipping with Q-SYS Designer v6.2, with additional plug-ins made available through Attero Tech’s customer portal for download available at https://portal.atterotech.com/home/.
Attero Tech’s new plug-ins provide the ability to configure parameters, including preamp controls and I/O levels, routing configurations, and device status updates. Real-time control of Attero Tech product parameters can be easily added to Q-SYS native touchscreen controllers, and other Q-SYS enabled software user control interfaces, eliminating the need to integrate and program costly third-party controllers.
Attero Tech’s AES67 solutions offer 48kHz, 24-bit uncompressed digital audio with 1ms end-to-end latency and system-wide sample synchronization, support for PTPv2 master or slave operation, and SAP (Session Announcement Protocol) based stream identification for use with applications supporting SAP Stream Discovery (Dante Controller, Q-SYS Designer, unIFY Control Panel v3.0 and greater).

In the small, central Italian town of Tolentino, the Politeama Theatre sat neglected for a quarter of a century before efforts began to return it to its rightful place at the heart of the local community. In October 2016, however, the project took on new significance when Tolentino and its surrounding region were struck by a series of earthquakes, including a 6.6 magnitude event that reduced other historic local buildings to rubble. Now the Politeama Theater and its comprehensive refurbishment have become symbols of Tolentino’s own resurgence.
The newly rejuvenated theatre was officially inaugurated in May 2017, and it already boasts a full schedule of theatrical, cinematic, musical, and educational events. Work originally began, however, in 2014, when ambitious plans were laid out for the venue’s return, including state-of-the-art technical systems. The audio design was devised by Claudio Giacomelli of AV Service, with technical support from Simone Santarelli of Symetrix distributor SISME. At the core of the solution are Symetrix DSPs routing and managing audio across multiple spaces.
On the ground floor, the entrance and main multipurpose performance space are covered by a single Symetrix Radius AEC DSP handling audio requirements ranging from background music to emergency announcements and paging. Equipped with the same 128 (64×64) redundant Dante channels as the original Radius, the Radius AEC adds the benefit of high performance wide-band acoustic echo cancellation featuring zero latency direct outputs and discrete references. Background music sources like Spotify and iTunes are integrated into the Dante network, supported by the Radius DSP. For ease of use, Giacomelli and his team used SymVue software to create a fully customised GUI, making it simple for the theatre’s staff to send different signals to different zones as required.
Meanwhile, in the basement area, Symetrix Prism 8×8 DSPs have been specified for a trio of multipurpose rooms available to host musical performances, workshops, exhibitions and other cultural events. The systems can be combined if required for specific larger-scale events, while Symetrix ARC-SW4e panels facilitate easy and seamless control. An additional Symetrix Radius AEC DSP has been specified in the 170-seat second-floor cinema, optimising the performance of the installed sound reinforcement system.
The combination of Dante networking and Symetrix DSPs has delivered a powerful solution for the restored theatre, observes Santarelli: “We are really happy with the results achieved with this new audio system. My role was to assist in the set-up of the Dante network and to support the Symetrix DSP programming, the results of which have been remarkable. The collaboration with Claudio Giacomelli, who is an excellent technician, has resulted in a really high-quality audio and video system for this iconic theatre.”
The Themed Entertainment Association (TEA) recently announced their 2018 Thea Award winners. And even with the diversity of winners – including theme parks, museums, visitor centres, and spectaculars – a majority of the winners had one thing in common: control products from ETC. Visitors to the 2017 LDI Show in Las Vegas this November found ETC’s booth awash in colour, thanks to the new ColorSource® CYC luminaire. Two 5.5m-tall cyc panels bookended the booth, each lit evenly and brightly in a range of tints and hues by the new LED fixtures. Show-goers were impressed – as were LDI’s judges, who honoured the ColorSource CYC with a Best Debuting Lighting Product award at a ceremony on Saturday night.
Technical Product Manager Dave Cahalane accepted the award on behalf of the development team. “With the ColorSource CYC, we tried to provide a fixture that had a broad range of beautiful colour in a compact size,” he explained in his acceptance speech.
The cyclorama light is the latest addition to the ColorSource family of products, which bring high-quality LED lighting and control to a more affordable price point. The ColorSource CYC adds a fifth emitter colour to the standard RGB-Lime array: indigo LEDs that help achieve rich, deep blues.
Other new products on ETC’s stand included the Ion® Xe and Ion Xe 20 control consoles and the Eos Fader Wings. ETC also commemorated the 25th anniversary of the Source Four® spotlight with a special, crowdsourced video displayed on the booth.
